Auxier Gas leak forces residents from homes

BATAVIA — Residents of a dozen homes on Meadowbrook Drive were asked to evacuate their homes Sunday afternoon while employers from neighboring Auxier Gas Co. dealt with a propane leak.

A Clermont County Sheriff's office dispatcher said Meadowbrook Drive residents were asked to leave as a precaution at about 2:30 p.m.

Chon Buckley, 20, of Meadowbrook Drive said a Batavia police officer came to his family's home and recommended that they evacuate.

Dispatchers said the “minor evacuation,” which lasted less than an hour, was prompted because a propane leak was discovered in an Auxier Gas Co. truck on company property on West Main Street. The leaking propane was eventually pumped into another truck. In August 1998, a propane leak caused an explosion and fire at Auxier, killing one person and injuring five others. The propane distributor was fined $67,200, in connection with the fatal explosion and fire, for several workplace violations, by the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
