MIAMI NOTEBOOK

RedHawks avoid losing season

CLEVELAND — Miami's win Monday ensured the program will avoid its first losing record since the 1989-90 season.

Miami (15-14) has now reached the MAC finals in four consecutive years.

The RedHawks' 8-10 MAC regular-season record ended a 10-year streak of finishing above .500.

Steady Mestas
With just 10 turnovers, Miami enhanced its reputation as a team that makes few mistakes. The RedHawks' season average of 11.3 turnovers a game is second best in the nation behind Temple.

Point guard Rob Mestas deserves most of the credit for the RedHawks' steady play. His ball handling and good judgment were on display against Marshall, when he turned the ball over just three times in 40 minutes.

“He kind of willed and led and made his team do things,” Bowling Green coach Dan Dakich said.

Fantastic finishes
The Miami-Marshall game continued the MAC tournament's amazing stretch of heart-stopping finishes. In quarterfinal action Sunday, all four games came down to the last possession and two went into overtime.

The two overtime games went an extra period because of buzzer-beating shots at the end of regulation.

One and out
Two MAC schools that lost in the first round of the tournament announced Monday that they are replacing their head coaches.

Western Michigan coach Bob Donewald will move into a new position as a special assistant to the athletic director.

Donewald was 151-155 in 11 years with the Broncos. This season, the team finished 10-18.

Also, Eastern Michigan said coach Milton Barnes' contract will not be renewed. In four seasons Barnes compiled a 62-53 record, including 15-13 in 1999-2000.
