Irelan charged with assault
Charter review member accuses ex-councilman
BY PHILLIP PINA
The Cincinnati Enquirer
LEBANON A former Waynesville council member faces an assault charge after a February confrontation at a village committee meeting.
Patrick Irelan, 71, who has served on the village council and planning commission, faces charges of assault and disorderly conduct. He was arraigned Thursday on the charges, both misdemeanors.
Mr. Irelan's friends dismissed the incident's severity. They said he just messed up another man's hair.
His accuser saw it differently.
Brent Morgan, also of Waynesville, filed complaints saying Mr. Ireland did knowingly cause or attempt to cause physical harm to him.
Mr. Morgan serves on a committee examining the village charter. He could not be reached for comment Thursday night.
Mr. Irelan has been an active participant at the committee's meetings, but he is not a member. The confrontation took place Feb. 28 at the Waynesville library after one of the meetings.
Mr. Irelan pleaded not guilty at his arraignment.
Warren County Court Judge Dallas Powers set an April 4 trial date.
Mr. Irelan resigned from his post as a volunteer school crossing guard, hoping to protect the village schools from any discomforted parents.
In a letter to school officials, he wrote, It may be of justified concern to parents who are unaware of the truth.
The former councilman is well-known through the village not only for his public service, but also for his years portraying Ebenezer Scrooge during the holidays for the 2,500 residents of Waynesville.
