COLD SPRING — Three Northern Kentuckians will be among the first six members of the Kentucky Association for Academic Competition student Hall of Fame.

Among those to be inducted is John O'Bryan, a 1988 Campbell County High School graduate killed in a 1991 car-train collision in Terre Haute, Ind.

The other local honorees are Trey Grayson of Park Hills and Andrew Strange of Lakeside Park.

Ceremonies will be Monday in Louisville at the Governor's Cup Competition awards ceremony, said John Bennett, association director. Hall of Famers were selected based on their outstanding accomplishments in academic competitions, high character and sportsmanship.

        Academic coaches nominated the winners.

“We think this will provide a role model for current students so they can see how competitions like the Governor's Cup become part of a successful career,” Mr. Bennett said.

        • Mr. O'Bryan was a student at the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology with a 4.0 average. He was studying for a triple major in physics, computer science and mathematics when he died. He was 21.

He was the recipient of the Indiana College Mathematics Competition Award and the Paul N. Bogart Prize for the highest cumulative average in college.

In high school, Mr. O'Bryan placed first in the 1988 American Invitational Math competition and was sixth in Kentucky's Governor's Cup math contest. He also earned first place in the National Honor Society math exam.

After his death, Mr. O'Bryan's parents started an annual math competition for high school students in their son's honor.

        • Mr. Grayson, an attorney at Greenebaum, Doll and McDonald in Covington, is a 1990 Dixie Heights High School graduate. He graduated from Harvard in 1994.

He was the captain of his academic team and placed in the top 10 Kentucky Governor's Cup competitions in 1989 and 1990. He also placed first in the 1989 Murray State University Golden 100 academic competition.

        • Mr. Strange, who works at Structural Dynamics Research Corp. in Milford, graduated from Dixie Heights High in 1993. He graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1998. He was among the top 10 finishers in language arts in the 1993 Governor's Cup competition. Mr. Strange also won a combined 24 placements in district, regional and state Governor's Cup contests.

Other inductees are Matthew Morris of Louisville, David Pettit of Owensboro and Shannan Stamper Petrilla of Russell.
