Blaze devastates restaurant

Major fire again closes Perkins

UNION TOWNSHIP — For the second time in less than eight years, Bill Theiss is preparing to rebuild his Perkins restaurant on Tylersville Road after it was heavily damaged by fire.

Union Township fire crews were called to the building at Interstate 75 around 12:30 a.m. Friday after a passer-by noticed flames coming from the back of the restaurant, which closed about 90 minutes earlier. No one was in the building when the fire broke out and there were no injuries.

“The first incoming unit confirmed flames coming from the roof,” said Union Township Fire Chief James Detherage. “There was definite structural damage to the metal superstructure of the building.”

He stopped short of calling the building a total loss, but said the damage could reach $700,000. The blaze remains under investigation and does not appear suspicious.

About 25 firefighters from Union and Liberty townships and Mason fought the blaze. The fire was brought under control around 2 a.m. and crews remained on the scene until 6 a.m., Chief Detherage said.

The restaurant was heavily damaged by a Feb. 24, 1993, fire and was closed for several months. That fire was caused by a carelessly discarded cigarette.

“We are going to rebuild,” Mr. Theiss said Friday morning. “This is a great location for us.”

The employees will work in Mr. Theiss' other three Perkins restaurants until the West Chester location is redone. That could take several months, Mr. Theiss said.
