Brossart wins 10th Region

Seiter's clutch shot beats Mason County

MAYSVILLE — Bishop Brossart's mannequin head is going to Rupp Arena — and it's taking the basketball team along for the ride.

The brown-haired, noseless head, with “HELPME” written in black marker across its forehead, is the Mustangs good luck charm, and it worked to perfection Saturday night.

Something helped Justin Seiter's lunging shot roll around the rim and drop through the net as time expired, giving Bishop Brossart a 52-50 win over the Mason County Royals in the 10th Region tournament championship game at Mason County.

The victory means the Mustangs will make their first-ever trip to the state Sweet Sixteen. They will meet Graves County, a 52-40 winner over Marshall County in the 1st Region tournament championship game.

The Brossart-Graves County game will be played at 1 p.m. Thursday at Rupp Arena.

“I don't think it's sunk in yet,” Bishop Brossart coach Willie Schlarman said. “I don't think it will until we get back. We're just thrilled to be going.”

“This is great,” said Brossart athletic director Mel Webster, who is in charge of planning the Mustangs' trip to Lexington. “I was sick and missed the girls trip to the All "A' tournament. You go to a lot of schools and you see their banners with all of the times they've gone. This is our first trip.”

        It's a trip the Mustangs

wouldn't be making without Seiter. The senior forward scored a game-high 28 points, including the last two on a play designed for him.

Mason County had fought back from a seven-point deficit to tie the score at 50 on Jamal Chambers's tip-in with 23 seconds left in the game. The Mustangs called a timeout, and Schlarman told them to get the ball to Seiter at the top of the key and clear out with about 10 seconds left.

“Only one guy is going to get the ball in that situation,” Schlarman said.

Seiter, with Harry Lewis guarding him, took two dribbles to his right, got a step with a crossover to his left, took one more dribble and launched a half-underhand, half-push shot toward the basket. The ball rolled around the rim almost two times before pausing and dropping inside.

“The ball touched every ounce of the rim,” said Mason County coach Kelly Wells. “It seemed like an eternity.”

“It felt like forever,” Seiter said. “That was the longest second of my life.”

Before winning the game, Seiter kept Brossart in it. He scored 17 of the Mustangs 30 first-half points to keep Mason County from pulling away.

        BISHOP BROSSART (52) — Ruth 5 1 11, Clark 3 3 9, Seiter 11 3 28, Ziegler 1 1 4. Totals: 20 8 52.

        MASON COUNTY (50) — Commodore 1 0 2, Myrick 0 2 2, Faulkner 1 2 5, Lewis 7 0 14, Gilbert 1 1 3, Sherman 2 0 6, Chambers 8 2 18. Totals: 20 7 50.

        Bishop Brossart ....... 12 18 13  9—52

        Mason County ....... 13 18  9 10—50

        3-pointers: BB — Seiter 3, Ziegler. MC — Sherman 2, Faulkner. Records: BB 19-12, MC 17-14.
