Michigan 5, Cyclones 4
The Cincinnati Enquirer
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. The Cyclones set a franchise record with their fifth consecutive shootout Saturday at the Van Andel Arena, a 5-4 loss to the Griffins.
Cyclones right wing Todd Hawkins connected on a goal and an assist to pace the offensive attack. Cincinnati scored two goals in the third period to erase a 3-2 deficit.
Gilbert Dionne, Greg Koehler and Ian MacNeil scored the other Cyclones goals. We had chances to win that game, Cyclones coach Ron Smith said. It was encouraging that we were once again able to rally and gain ground in the standings (a point for the shootout loss).
I am proud of the way the guys are playing right now.
Cincinnati goaltender Randy Petruk stopped 41 shots in regulation and three of five in the shootout.
The Cyclones, currently fourth in the IHL's Eastern Conference standings, improved to 33-26-6.
Cincinnati trails Cleveland for third place in the East by four points. They were 12 points behind on Feb. 18.
