Buchanan back on campaign trail

Conservative to speak at Warren church

BY TOM O'NEILL
The Cincinnati Enquirer

MONROE — Presidential candidate Pat Buchanan will speak at a public rally tonight at the Solid Rock Church in this Warren County community.

Mr. Buchanan, who local organizers say has reinvigorated his campaign since the dust settled on Republican and Democratic primaries last week, will speak at 7:30 p.m. following a fund-raiser that organizers hope will bring in up to $10,000.

It will be his first major rally since Vice President Al Gore and Texas Gov. George W. Bush virtually locked up the Democratic and Republican nominations.

Solid Rock is a nondenominational church that does not endorse candidates. The church was selected, in part, for its proximity to Cincinnati and Dayton and its staunch anti-abortion position, which Mr. Buchanan shares.

Mr. Buchanan, who spoke on NBC's Meet the Press Sunday and was scheduled to ap pear on this morning's Today show, is essentially a candidate looking for a party.

The former Republican presidential candidate may be the front-runner for the Reform Party nomination, which would qualify him for about $12.5 million in federal matching-funds.

But if party founder Ross Perot makes an “11th-hour” announcement of his own candidacy, the nomination could be his.

For now, Mr. Buchanan is running his conservative-agen da candidacy in hopes of winning Reform's endorsement.

“He's been intentionally laying low during the prima ry,” Jennifer Giroux, Southwest Ohio chairwoman for Mr. Buchanan's campaign, said Sunday. “His point is Gore and Bush agree on virtually every issue. ... He's a serious contrast.”

Ms. Giroux, 37, of Madeira, said that “no one knows if Ross Perot will jump in, but he (Mr. Buchanan) definitely will not back out.” The Reform Party convention will be in California in August.

Mr. Buchanan was in transit to New York Sunday and was unavailable for comment.
