Horse throws Warren County official

Commissioner to need therapy

BY CINDI ANDREWS
The Cincinnati Enquirer

MORROW — A Warren County commissioner remained hospitalized in Cincinnati on Monday after a horse threw him Sunday at his family farm near Morrow.

Mike Kilburn, 45, was flown by Air Care to Universi ty Hospital in Corryville after the accident Sunday evening.

He had been riding a 3-year-old, Meadowlark, on his parents' farm, near his own home, between 5 and 5:30 p.m. when the horse reared up, Mr. Kilburn's wife, Debbie, said Monday.

Mr. Kilburn lay on the ground 15 or 20 minutes before his daughter, Stacy, 15, heard his calls as she walked home, Mrs. Kilburn said.

“At first he had no sensation, and it really scared him,” she said.

Mr. Kilburn has recovered feeling in his legs but has tingling and pain in his arms, Mrs. Kilburn said. He previously had two back surgeries.

Mr. Kilburn was undergoing tests Monday and will require physical therapy, she said.

It was unclear what caused Meadowlark to throw him, but she had just been shoed.

“Mike's a real good rider; he's been riding horses since he was a kid,” his wife said.

As a commissioner of 18 years and co-owner of Stine-Kilburn Funeral Home, Mr. Kilburn is well known in War ren County, and the news traveled quickly Monday.

“The prayers and best wishes are exactly what he needs right now,” said Commission President Pat South, who took many calls from people concerned about him.

“It was tragic,” she said. “But Mike is strong of heart and strong of will; and, knowing him, he will be back at the grind ... as soon as possible.”
