Man shot by police in Norwood

Witnesses say he threatened to use knife

BY WILLIAM A. WEATHERS
The Cincinnati Enquirer

NORWOOD — Police shot a knife-wielding man in the middle of a street here Monday night after officers tried for several minutes to talk him into surrendering.

Chris Baker was being operated on for a gunshot wound in the chest late Monday, University Hospital officials said. His condition was not immediately available.

Neighbors said he is 21 years old and lives in an apartment in the 1800 block of Mills Street.

Police said they were called to that block about 10:20 p.m. on a domestic violence complaint.

When the first officers arrived, “he was lunging at them with a knife,” said Mich elle Shumney, 33, who lives in an apartment above Mr. Baker. “He was not going to let them take him.”

Officers talked to the man as he walked up and down the street brandishing the knife, she said.

“They tried to get him to put the knife down,” she said.

Curt Hensley, 16, of Tilton Avenue in Norwood, said officers sprayed chemical irritant at the man.

As he lunged toward the officers, one fired a shot, he said.

Ms. Shumney said Mr. Baker had been arguing with young relatives who live in the same building before police were called.
