Munoz named best in Division I

Mason junior a contender for Miss Basketball

BY DAVE SCHUTTE
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Mason High junior Michelle Munoz was named the Ohio Division I Player of the Year on Monday by the Associated Press.

“This is great honor, and I'm overwhelmed,” Munoz said. “I guess I should thank God because he gave me the talent.”

Munoz, a 6-foot center, is a leading contender to win Ohio's Miss Basketball, which will be announced Wednesday evening.

She was second-team all-state last season and has committed to attend the University of Tennessee.

“This is nice, but I'll have to quickly put the honor away and think of the team,” Munoz said. “Our bigger goal is to win the state championship this weekend.”

Mason (25-0), the top-ranked Division I team in Ohio, plays Cleveland East Tech in a state semifinal on Friday in Columbus.

If the Comets win, they will advance to the championship game 8:30p.m. Saturday against the winner of the Pickerington/Parma Heights Holy Name semifinal game.

Lebanon center Lindsey Hicks was named to the Division I second team; Mason junior Jere' Issenmann, made third-team all-state.

Colerain's Chris Trentman was one of four coaches sharing the Division I Coach of the Year honors.
