Antioch students slain in Costa Rica

The Associated Press and The Cincinnati Enquirer

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica — Two 19-year-old American women were found shot to death near a beach town in Costa Rica, security officials said Tuesday.

The women have been identified as Emily Howell, a second-year student at Antioch College, in Yellow Springs, Ohio, from Lexington, and Emily Eagen, of Detroit, a former Antioch student.

School officials said the women's burned-out sports utility vehicle was found near the town of Guapiles, about 60 miles from where their bodies were found.

The bodies were discovered along a highway near the town of Cahuita, about 90 miles east of San Jose, said Jesus Urena, a spokesman for the Public Security Ministry.

Ms. Howell was in Costa Rica as part of Antioch's Cooperative Education Program.

Scott Warren, dean of students at Antioch, said Ms. Howell had been in the Central American nation since January on a photography project. Ms. Eagen was visiting her.

He said authorities were uncertain of the motive. “It appears to be a random, tragic incident.”

A faculty member from Antioch visited the students last week and said they were fine, Mr. Warren said.

“It's a horrible loss and cause for mourning for all of us,” he said.

“(Ms. Howell) was a wonderful person, very warm, very caring, community-orientated,” he said. “She had a lot of friends, a great student.”

The college is planning a memorial service in honor of the two women.

Marie McCain contributed to this report.
