DISC PICKS
Soundtracks and hot pickers are the week's big releases, says pop music critic Larry Nager.

Elton John's The Road To El Dorado (Dreamworks; $18.98 CD, $12.98 cassette) reunites Sir Elton with his Lion King lyricist Tim Rice for the upcoming animated feature.

The Million Dollar Hotel (Interscope; $18.98 CD, $12.98 cassette) features six songs by Bono, three with U2 (he also co-wrote the story for the Wim Wenders film).

Here On Earth (Columbia/Sony Music Soundtrax;) skews to a younger audience, with a duet by local boy Nick Lachey of 98` and his steady girl Jessica Simpson. Non-Cincinnati-connected performers on the set include Tori Amos, Beth Orton and Sixpence None The Richer.

For guitarists, Joe Satriani plays lots of flashy six-string, as well as everything else on Engines of Creation (Epic; $17.98 CD, $11.98 cassette).

John Scofield drives his guitar along a funkier path on Bump (Verve; $17.98 CD only).

And there's a different sort of string wizardry displayed on Wires and Wood (Giant; $16.98 CD, $10.98 cassette) by the Johnny Staats Project, featuring West Virginia UPS delivery guy/bluegrass mandolin virtuoso Johnny Staats.
