Officer injured in skywalk attack

A Cincinnati police officer was assaulted and robbed late Monday while patrolling the downtown skywalk.

Officer Kathleen Newsom was treated for a concussion and other injuries at University Hospital and released.

Officer Newsom was patrolling the skywalk about 11 p.m. when she encountered a man lying on the floor at 524 Race St., police said Tuesday. As the officer approached, the man stood up with his hands in his pockets and ignored her request to show his hands.

The man showed his hands after Officer Newsom drew her chemical irritant and requested backup, police said. When the officer put the chemical irritant back on her gun belt and asked the suspect for identification, he punched her and wrestled her to the ground.

During the struggle, the attacker attempted to remove the officer's handgun from its holster while threatening to kill her, police said. The man fled.

A suspect was found shortly afterward hiding in foliage at 18 Garfield Place. Darryl L. Sheppard, 40, of Over-the-Rhine was charged with aggravated robbery and felonious assault on a police officer.
