Madcap puppets to bring kids' creations to life

BY JACKIE DEMALINE
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Mrs. (Noella) Tripetti's second-grade class at Carthage Paideia Academy took a “field trip” to the creepy boiler room/crawl space in the the school's basement and were inspired to write The Monster in the Basement. Ewwwww!

Nothing personal, but Dan Wood of C.T. Young Elementary in Cleves, is the author of My Principal Is an Alien.

Akilah Hughes of Latonia Elementary in Covington turned to classic excuses (in this case true) for My Dog Ate My Homework.

All these stories were adapted for the stage and will be part of Madcap Productions giant puppet show, Tales Out of School. Itplays at 1 and 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and March 25 and 26 at Cincinnati Art Museum.

“We asked for stories from a lot of schools,” says Madcap artistic director Jerry Handorf. Most of the stories came from schools where Madcap has a relationship.

C.T. Young Elementary and Latonia Elementary are both Madcap Adopt-a-Schools. Their entire student bodies will attend the show. Author Dan Wood is even doing a voice-over in his play.

Madcap works with MUSE Machine in Dayton, and that's where Math Attack by Tyler Cochran of Demmitt Elementary in Vandalia originated. A November residency at London Elementary in Kentucky resulted in Super-Glued to the Wall by Ashley Callans.

Local songwriter Jude Jones has written several tunes for songs including “Homework,” “Glowing Green Glop” and “Math Attack.”

Tickets $6 kids, $8 adults, museum admission free with tickets. Call 721-2787.
