Allison's in UK's thoughts

Kentucky Notebook

BY NEIL SCHMIDT
The Cincinnati Enquirer

CLEVELAND Desmond Allison is neither gone nor forgotten. The suspended sophomore won't play again this season for Kentucky, but UK officials have left open the possibility of his return.

“He has lost the privilege of playing,” Athletic Director C.M. Newton said Monday on a radio show. “To say he'd never regain that, I would not say that. But it's not going to be an easy thing to gain that privilege back.”

If convicted of a DUI, Allison would not be allowed to play next season. But he could regain his scholarship for the 2001-02 season.

“I purposely use the word indefinite (describing the suspension) instead of permanent, because I don't want to ever give up on a youngster,” Newton said. “But I want everybody to understand the seriousness of this.”

When UK plays today, Allison will have to watch on TV. He has gone home to Tampa, Fla., for spring break, and there's no word whether he'll return to Lexington to finish the semester academically. His scholarship would remain in effect the rest of the semester.

“He's distraught,” UK coach Tubby Smith said of Allison. “He's hurting. His mom, his coaches — everybody's devastated.”

Magloire a Bonnie?
Magloire will face off today with St. Bonaventure senior center Caswell Cyrus, a fellow Toronto native who nearly became his teammate. Bonnies coach Jim Baron recruited Magloire heavily out of high school.

“I liked their program,” Magloire said. “I made one of my (five) official visits there, but I just ended up liking UK better.”

Cyrus and Magloire never played each other in high school.

“I knew about him from AAU ball,” Magloire said. “I'm looking forward to facing him.”

Princely 'Do
Those watching Pepperdine's first-round game Friday night against Indiana may not recognize Tommie Prince. Especially in relation to his brother, UK sophomore swingman Tayshaun Prince.

Tommie wears a massive afro, perhaps the largest in Division I. Tayshaun, by comparison, keeps a closely cropped 'do.

“He's had it for a long time,” Tayshaun said. “No, I'd never grow one. It wouldn't look right on me.”

Tommie, a senior forward, averages 9.9 points and 4.7 rebounds for the 24-8 Waves.
