Madeira's last shot misses
BY DAVE SCHUTTE

The magic-carpet ride by the Madeira Mustangs came to an abrupt end Wednesday at Wright State University's Nutter Center.
Senior guard Gregg Haines scored 10 points in the fourth quarter, including four during the final 57.3 seconds, to give Jamestown Greeneview a 53-51 victory over the Mustangs in the Division III regional semifinals.
Greeneview advances to Saturday's regional championship game against Versailles. Madeira finishes with a 20-4 record.
The Mustangs had possession of the ball with 2.6 second left with a chance to win. The ball was inbounded to senior guard Tim Dooley who fired a 21-foot shot that was off the mark.
I got a good look, Dooley said. When it left my hand and was in the air, I thought it was good. It turned out to be a little long.
Greeneview coach Bill Green felt lucky the Rams came away with the victory.
We've been a mediocre free-throw shooting team all season and I thought someday it would hurt us, Green said. Tonight we got away with one of our poorest free-throw shooting games of the season.
Greeneview had a chance to put the game away in the fourth quarter, but the Rams converted only four of 14 foul shots in the quarter, including just one of eight in the final 43.8 seconds.
The Rams were 5-of-16 from the line for the game while Madeira was 1-of-8.
Our kids have somehow come up with the big play when they needed it all season, Green said. The layup by Gregg (Haines) and his 3-pointer moments later were the big plays today.
With 1:45 remaining and Madeira leading 49-46, Haines drove to the foul lane, scored on a shot jump shot and was fouled by Madeira junior center Bret Underwood, his fifth foul. Hines missed the free throw.
On the Rams next possession, Haines picked up a loose ball about 20 feet from the basket and made a 3-pointer with 57.3 seconds remaining, giving the Rams a 51-49 lead.
Madeira was guilty of turnovers on its next two possessions and Haines and Trevor Thomas each made one of two free throws. Dooley's field goal with 10.7 seconds remaining cut the final deficit of two.
Our defense won the game, Green said. They averaged over 70 points a game and our goal was to take away the inside and also challenge them on the outside. Our kids did a great job of doing both.
Madeira was sharp in the first half. The Mustangs sank six 3-pointers and led 16-15 after the first quarter and 28-24 at halftime.
