Hamilton's luck runs out

DAYTON, Ohio Hamilton finally ran into a tournament opponent it could not keep within bombing distance until game's end.
Beavercreek was sloppy but put together just enough offense to stay out of range in a 46-29 win in a Division I regional semifinal game Thursday night at University of Dayton Arena. Beavercreek (24-1), the regional runner-up last year, advances to meet St.Xavier for the regional title at 7:30p.m. Saturday at UD Arena.
Hamilton ends at 13-12.
Beavercreek opened a double-digit lead early in the second quarter but struggled to pull away from Hamilton. The Beavers' lead after three quarters was 32-23.
The lead was up to 11 before Hamilton's Josh Andrews hit a 3-pointer with 6:30 left, cutting the margin to 34-26 and setting the stage for the kind of late run that has marked Hamilton's success in the tournament.
That's what I just told the kids, Hamilton coach Larry Allen said. A couple of times I thought we would get going, but we just couldn't get three or four shots to go in a row like we have in the past. Of course, give Beavercreek some credit for that.
Beavercreek's matchup zone limited Hamilton to just .316 shooting in the game. Drives by David Huff proved to be the Big Blue's most effective weapon. Huff made six of 12 shots on his way to a team-high 13 points.
Beavercreek ended Hamilton's hopes with a 6-0 run after Andrews' 3-pointer to take control at 40-26. The game had a bad ending for the Beavers, however, when a collision with a teammate left reserve forward Chad Elkins lying on the court for 20 minutes with a dislocated kneecap. That came with 1:16 to play and reserves already in for both teams.
I thought we played excellent defense, Beavercreek coach Buzz Seilhamer said. To hold a team like that to 29 points is a pretty good accomplishment, as hot as they've been.
Teddy Williams led Beavercreek with 12 points; Jeremy Renner added 11.
Seilhamer said he expects a tough matchup against St.X.
They'll be in your face, he said. It will be the same type of game as this. And they might be the best passing team I've seen.
