COLUMBUS — Madeira learned first-hand why the South Euclid Regina Royals are ranked No. 8 in the USA Today Super 25 poll.

Combining a swarming defense with balanced scoring, the Royals overwhelmed the Amazons 58-31 in the Division III regional semifinals at the Schottenstein Center.

Ranked No. 2 in Ohio, Regina meets top-ranked, undefeated Bluffton for the state championship 2 p.m. Saturday.

“We knew coming in that we would have trouble getting into our offense because of their quickness,” Madeira coach Dave Schlensker said.

At the outset, it appeared that the Amazons would make a game of it. With Amanda Davis scoring four points and Allison Shaw two, Madeira took a quick 6-0 lead.

“We may have gone up too quickly,” Schlensker said. “I think that they may have underestimated us and the six points woke them up.”

Then Regina took control. The Royals took a 13-10 lead at the quarter break and extended it to 31-18 at halftime. Junior guard Ari Moore paced Regina with 14 in the first half.

“I don't think we came out flat,” Regina coach Patrick Diulus said. “I wouldn't say we were nervous but a better explanation is anxious. From that point, our defense took over.”

The Royals'pressure forced 17 first-half turnovers by Madeira and 32 in the game.

“We've played some quick teams such as Wyoming and Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy,” Schlensker said. “But we've never played a team with five players this quick. And, they were also physical.”

Sophomore center Amanda Davis, who led Madeira with 13 points, was impressed with Regina.

“They were very physical down low,” Davis said. They were all over us.”

Regina opened up a 40-20 lead early in the third quarter as the pressure defense continued to take its toll.

“We don't actually press,” Diulus said. “We jump around and try to put pressure on the opponent. We've forced a lot of turnovers all season but today was one of our better games.”

Diulus also pointed out that Madeira was changing from zone to man-to-man on defense but they were able to pick it up.

“When they yelled No. 1, we knew they would be in a man,” Diulus said. “When it was No. 2, they were in a zone. My assistant coached picked this up and it helped.”

The Amazons played most of the game without starter Amy Mackris.

“Amy's had a bout with the flu all week,” Schlensker said. “She's a tough kid and if she could have played, she would have been in there.”

Moore, who had a mediocre performance in the regional championship game, wanted to prove something tonight.”

“My goal was to leave it all on the floor and that's how we all played tonight, she said.”

Madeira bows out with a 19-7 record while Regina, who's only loss was to Cleveland East Tech, takes a 26-1 record into the title game.
