Plans for '513' delayed
BY MIKE BOYER
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Southwest Ohio won't run out of new telephone numbers as fast as originally thought.
State regulators said Friday that they're delaying plans announced last year that would create a second area code in the 513 calling area.
The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio said it was also postponing similar steps for the 440 area code in northwestern Ohio for the same reason.
Previously, the 513 area code was expected to run out of new numbers in 2002. But PUCO said Cincinnati Bell Telephone expects the return of 135 number prefixes by early next year, delaying the exhaust date. PUCO is required to act within 24 months of the projected area code exhaustion.
