Staying In
TV picks: TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE: The Beat premiere, 9 p.m., UPN. Channel 25
That shaky camera, the one that almost ruined the great Homicide: Life on the Street series, is back in The Beat (9 p.m., Channel 25). Beyond the wiggly picture, The Beat from Barry Levinson and Tom Fontana, offers a strong look at young in crisis.
Derek Cecil and Mark Ruffalo are excellent as young cops Mike Dorigan and Zane Marinelli. Poppy Montgomery is first-rate as the med student that Dorigan should marry.
The wild-card element comes from a wonderful character played by Heather Burns as Marinelli's new girlfriend, madly sensuous one moment and just mad the next.
The Goods (What's in stores today)
Video picks: Enquirer film critic Margaret A. McGurk recommends The Limey, a lean, mean drama from Steven Soderbergh featuring a knockout star turn by Terence Stamp, plus fine supporting work from Peter Fonda. Out today.
