Parking to be tight for Reds' day games

Lots will be reserved for ticketed fans

BY DAN KLEPAL
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Ken Griffey Jr. and the Reds will put a hit on some downtown parkers this year.

The Reds will close about 5,000 parking spaces around the stadium to everyone but fans going to the game during nine weekday afternoons this season.

NO PARKING
Dates the Cinergy Field parking garage, two lots west of Cinergy Field and one lot between Cinergy and the Firstar Center will be open only to Reds ticketholders:

The affected spaces are at the Cinergy Field garage, two lots west of the stadium and one lot between the Firstar Center and Cinergy.

The reason for closing the spaces is simple: The Reds are expecting bigger crowds based on last year's success and the addition of star players such as Mr. Griffey and Dante Bichette.

About 4,600 people count on those parking spaces during the week. But the spaces can be reserved for Reds' ticket holders because of a clause in the team's lease that allows the team to restrict parking on game days. Typically, that clause is enacted only on Opening Day.

Commuters aren't off the hook when Reds play night games, either.

Although parkers can use the spaces during the day, anyone not going to the game will have to clear out by 6:30 p.m.

Leron Canup, project manager for the Cinergy Field parking garage, said he's not sure what the penalty will be if people park in the garages during day games.

“I haven't decided yet, but people will either get towed or a parking ticket,” Mr. Canup said. Night games should be less of a problem, he said: “About 90 percent of the our customers are gone by that time anyway.”

Hamilton County will put leaflets on cars in those parking areas over the next few days, with suggestions of other places to park. Among them:

        • Kenton County Garage loacross the Roebling Suspension Bridge in Covington.

        • Broadway Commons offers ample parking in the northeast section of downtown.

        • Several Metro bus service park-and-ride locations.
