UK's Smith 'not going anywhere'

Coach not going to pros

Enquirer news services

Kentucky coach Tubby Smith said Monday he is not leaving the Wildcats — not for the Atlanta Hawks, not for Georgia Tech, not for any job.

“I'm not going anywhere,” Smith said. “I'm planning on being back next season. I'm very comfortable here. ... I don't know why people say I'm fed up. I've got the best job in the world.”

By Kentucky standards, this season was less than satisfying. The Wildcats finished 23-10 and lost to Syracuse in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. It was the first time since 1994 that Kentucky did not advance to the Sweet Sixteen. Smith, however, said he believes his thin team maximized resources.

“To make it as far as we did is really amazing,” he said. “And the best thing is that we have eight of nine guys back.”

Has he had any job-related discussions with the Hawks? “No,” Smith said. With Tech? “No.” With any other franchise or school? “No.”

HOLLOWAY QUESTIONABLE: Seton Hall point guard Shaheen Holloway needed crutches to walk on his sprained left ankle Monday. His status is questionable for Friday's game against Oklahoma State in the tournament.

An MRI was performed Monday to examine the ligament, but the results won't be known until today, Seton Hall sports information director Marie Wozniak said.

IOWA STATE: Iowa State's basketball team will fly to Detroit today — with or without coach Larry Eustachy.

Eustachy does not like to fly and he said Monday he had not decided how he would get there. Iowa State plays UCLA on Thursday night at The Palace in Auburn Hills, just outside Detroit.

Eustachy often drives to and from games during the season while the team flies. He said he doesn't have a mortal fear of flying but just feels more comfortable driving when he can.

RATINGS: Ratings for the first four days of the NCAA Men's Tournament were up an average of 6 percent over last year and were the highest since 1994.
