Miami recruit named Mr. Basketball
Mason shares Ohio's top player honor
The Associated Press and The Cincinnati Enquirer
Guard Chet Mason of Cleveland South High School, a Miami University recruit, was named co-winner of the 1999-2000 Associated Press Ohio Mr. Basketball award Wednesday.
Mason shares the award with Medina's Tony Stockman.
The 6-foot-3 Mason, nicknamed The Jet, averaged 25 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists a game. He signed with Miami in November, and MU coach Charlie Coles said Mason will play point guard.
He's really a fullcourt player, good in transition, Coles said. He jumps well and finishes well for a guard. A lot of times a guard gets in there and can't get the ball to the rim, or the big guys will scare him off. But Chet is good at getting his shot off.
South coach Miguel Curl said Mason can get upcourt in four or five dribbles, then finish with a dunk.
He's very quick, Curl said. Quick feet. Quick hands. And he gets off the floor. He can really fly.
Miami loses fifth-year senior point guard Rob Mestas next season. The RedHawks have another new point guard candidate in transfer Doug Davis, formerly Mateen Cleaves' backup at Michigan State.
Mason and Stockman, who also shared AP Division I play er of the year honors, captured the award in balloting by a state media panel. Stockman, a 6-2 senior, scored 25.4 points a game with 6.1 assists, 4.7 rebounds and 3.2 steals.
They edged Dayton Christian's Romain Guessagba-Sato, a Xavier recruit, in the voting.
