Stay a while, visitors urged

BY CLIFF PEALE
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Ten million people poured through Dearborn County last year on the way to the Argosy and Grand Victoria casinos. Debbie Smith's job is to make sure they stay.

Ms. Smith, director of the Dearborn County Convention, Visitor and Tourism Bureau, wants to filter more of that money from the casinos to area hotels, restaurants and other hospitality businesses.

“It's been really healthy for this community because the name is getting out there. It helps us all sell Southeastern Indiana.”

The bureau has joined with Switzerland, Ohio, Ripley and Jefferson counties to market the area through its “Down the Lazy River” campaign. That touts attractions like Perfect North Slopes, Chateau Pomije Winery and the historic district in Madison, Ind.

The bureau is selling packages that include casino tickets, hotel rooms and local events.
