Education boards name new members

Middletown, Edgewood fill unexpired terms

MIDDLETOWN — The Middletown and Edgewood boards of education each have a new member.

Lawyer Stephen Lane, a 1979 Middletown High School graduate, was chosen Monday evening from a field of nine applicants to fill the open seat created when Monroe resident Carol Brotherton resigned one week after Monroe residents voted to split from Middletown and form their own district.

Meanwhile, in Trenton, businessman and Quarterback Club founding member Doug Wheelright was chosen from a field of eight candidates to fill the Edgewood seat vacated by John Thomas, who resigned this month.

Both Mr. Lane and Mr. Wheelright will fill unexpired terms and will serve through Dec. 31, 2001.

“I know Middletown. I understand the issues. I have a commitment. I felt it was time to see if there was something I could give back to the community,” said Mr. Lane, a lifelong Middletown resident. “I'm very honored to have gone through the process and and am honored to have been chosen. It's a challenge I'm looking forward to.”

He has served on the Business Education Community Collaborative and was recent ly named co-chairman of a subcommittee that is studying full service centers in the district.

At Edgewood, Mr. Wheelright, a St. Clair Township resident with construction experience, will assist the board as it moves forward with plans to expand Edgewood High School and build a connector between Bloomfield and Trenton elementary schools.

“It was a tough choice. We had eight people who stepped up,” said John Snyder, presi dent of the Edgewood board. “Doug has served in a public office. He has a great interest in the schools for all the right reasons. He wanted to give something back to the community.”

The father of three daughters, all Edgewood graduates, Mr. Wheelright has served two terms on the St. Clair Township Board of Trustees. He owns carryouts in West Chester and New Miami and is a former member of the Butler County Board of Zoning Appeals.
