Fund-raiser will help cancer victim's family
BY JOHN JOHNSTON
The Cincinnati Enquirer
A fund-raising dance will be held Saturday to help the family of a Finneytown boy who died of cancer.
The family of Paul Rolfes needs assistance to pay his funeral and medical bills. Paul died in January at age 16 after a two-year battle with Ewing's sarcoma, a rare bone cancer.
He was one of three Finneytown High boys diagnosed with cancer in the past two years. The story of how the school community rallied around the boys was told in a three-part Enquirer series, Circle of Friends, published this month. (Read the series at Enquirer.com/finneytown).
The dance will be 8 p.m. to midnight at St. Bartholomew Church, 9375 Winton Road, Springfield Township. Admission is $12.50 per person or $20 per couple in advance; $15 per person at the door.
It will feature live music, food, dancing, raffle prizes and a large-screen TV so college basketball fans can watch the NCAA Tournament.
The event is being organized by Lori Zwick and Rebecca Heck. Mrs. Zwick is vocalist for the Gamut of Rock and Roll, a band that will perform at the benefit. The five-piece band also played at the October 1998 Finneytown Walk for Hope, which raised money for the Rolfes family and the family of Brian Weiss, whose leukemia is in remission.
This community has been wonderful, Mrs. Zwick says. I get calls every day from people who want to help.
Donations of food are still needed, she says. Call Mrs. Zwick at 681-7040. Tickets can be reserved by calling that number.
Monetary donations can be sent to the Paul Rolfes memorial fund at Winton Savings and Loan, 8670 Winton Road, Cincinnati, 45231.
