Mason basks in hoopla
Lady Comets generate pride
BY KEVIN ALDRIDGE
The Cincinnati Enquirer
MASON It isn't quite a sea of green yet, but there's a tide of that hue sweeping the city in the aftermath of the Lady Comets' state basketball championship.
City Council paid tribute to the nation's second-ranked team this week by adopting a resolution lauding the Mason High School team for an undefeated season and victory over Pickerington in the state championship game two weeks ago. City leaders were working Monday night from an agenda printed on green paper.
And there's more green coming to honor Mason's first state champion.
There will be green-and-white signs at every entrance to the city proclaiming Mason as The Home of the State Champion Lady Comets. City leaders also plan to hang a huge green-and-white banner across Main Street just outside City Hall with a similar message.
And for good measure, the city will paint a green stripe down the middle of U.S. 42 through the city.
For those of us who've been around (Mason) for a while, this team was certainly a sight to behold, said Mayor John McCurley. (They've) certainly brought joy and happiness into all our lives.
These young ladies are very deserving of such accolades, not only for the way they play basketball but for the way they represent themselves, their high school and their community, Mr. McCurley said. They are excellent examples for all the young ladies in our school system to follow.
Senior Beth Jones accepted the accolades Monday night on behalf of her coach and teammates.
We always hear people say that we've brought joy to their lives, but it works both ways, she said. To be able to look up into the stands and see thousands of people supporting us ... we can't even begin to express how much that meant to us.
