        • Guitar evening: The National Council for the Traditional Arts' “Masters of the Steel String Guitar” tour plays the Dayton Art Institute at 8 p.m. today.         • Last of month: Final Friday means doors of all the Main Street and Pendleton area art galleries will be open 6-9 p.m. today.

        • CSO guest: Irish pianist Barry Douglas will play Brahms' Piano Concerto No. 1 with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra at 8 p.m. today (and Saturday) at Music Hall. Jesus Lopez-Cobos conducts John Corigliano's “AIDS” Symphony. $12-$46. 381-3300.

STAYING IN
        • TV picks: Animal Planet cable debuts its first prime-time drama series, Call of the Wild, based on the classic Jack London novel. Nick Mancuso (Under Siege) stars as Jack Thornton in the two-hour premiere (8 p.m.) about a Yukon family during the Alaskan gold rush a century ago. Another episode airs at 8 p.m. Saturday before moving to 9 p.m. Mondays.

        • TV Critic John Kiesewetter says the eight O-Town band finalists begin rigorous training in Orlando on ABC's new Making the Band (9:30 p.m., Channels 9, 2).

        • Web site of the day: The Philadelphia Inquirer found out that some census forms can be completed and submitted online. What it can't tell is exactly which ones. You need to go clicking through a questionnaire to find out if the form mailed to your house qualifies you for online submission. Try www.2000.census.gov.

BRAND SPANKIN' NEW
        • Parenting magazine: The new Offspring, from the editors of SmartMoney, will focus on giving parents advice for all phases of their children's development. Among topics in the premiere edition: how computers and the Internet are changing how kids learn, the 100 best children's booksand the escalating cost of a four-year college education. $2.95 on newsstands.

HARRIED WITH CHILDREN
        • Get dolled up: American Heritage Girls, a national scouting organization for girls, sponsors “Samantha's Ice Cream Social — An American Girls Event,” this weekend at Music Hall. The event is inspired by the stories of Samantha Parkington, one of six fictional characters from the American Girls Collection. Bring your favorite doll and learn about life in Samantha's time, practice etiquette and create your own sundaes. PLANNING AHEAD
        • 24 hours out: Xavier University is the scene of the hottest hip-hop show to play the area in a while, as Wyclef Jean performs Saturday at Schmidt Fieldhouse. Kelis will open the 7:30 p.m. show. $10 (745-3534).
