Local fighter cruises to Olympic berth

The Associated Press

TAMPA, Fla. — Cincinnati's Ricardo Williams Jr. and world champion Ricardo Juarez led a group of seven U.S. boxers into the Olympics with semifinal victories Thursday night at an Americas qualifying tournament.

Williams boxed his way to a 4-0 win over Michael Strange of Canada at 139 pounds. Williams registered single scoring blows against the taller Canadian in the second and fourth rounds and scored two points in the third.

Cincinnati's Dante Craig, at 147, still can qualify for the Olympics in tournaments April 17-22 at Mexico City or May 23-38 at Buenos Aires, Argentina. Craig lost to Argentina's Guillermo Saputo Wednesday.
