HIGH SCHOOL INSIDER

Bethel-Tate's Moore gets high marks

BY DAVE SCHUTTE
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Jessica Moore, a 17-year-old senior at Bethel-Tate High School, perfectly fits the description of what a student-athlete should be.

“Before Jessica graduates, she will have earned 16 varsity letters,” athletic director Rick Wilson said. “But, she has also won 16 scholar-athlete awards given by the league Southern Buckeye Conference).”

In four seasons, Moore has won four varsity letters in soccer, three in basketball, one in cross country and four as a member of the academic team. She will also end up with four in track.

But Moore's academic honors are more impressive.

Ranked No.1 in the senior class, Moore is a National Merit Scholarship finalist. She also is vice president of the National Honor Society.

“I'm proudest of making it as a National Merit Scholarship finalist,” Moore said. “That's not something that everybody achieves. I don't know why, but the academic part comes easy and my favorite subjects are math and the sciences because I love learning something new.”

Moore's academic achievements are reflected in her college entrance exam scores.

“Jessica scored a 35 on the ACT out of a possible 36,” Wilson said. “She scored 1450 on the SAT out of a possible 1600.”

Although Moore won't earn a college grant-in-aid for sports, she has already received several academic offers from the University of Chicago and Case Western Reserve University.

“I can't say enough about Jessica,” Wilson said. “We've had a lot of good athletes at the school, but few who have done as well both in sports and in the classroom.”

TOURNEY MONEY: The anticipated economic boom turned out to be a financial bust.

When the Ohio High School Athletic Association decided to move the girls state basketball tournament from the 13,000-seat St. John Arena to the 19,500-seat Schottenstein Center, a substantial increase in attendance was expected.

But attendance was 54,958 for the eight sessions, down more than 8,000 from 1999.

The biggest drops were in the championship games. This may have been the result of the Ohio News Network's live telecasts of the finals.

But due to the revenue generated by the TV contract, profits from this year's tournament could be equal to or better than to last year's.

HUGGINS FEATURED: University of Cincinnati men's basketball coach Bob Huggins will be the featured speaker at the Moeller Stag on Thursday, April 13, at the school's activity center.

Paul Keels, the radio voice of the Ohio State Buckeyes and a 1975 Moeller graduate, will be master of ceremonies.
