Kroger field starts taking shape

The Cincinnati Enquirer

Tournament director Margie French announced Tuesday that she has secured oral commitments from several Senior PGA Tour players to compete in the 11th annual Kroger Senior Classic Sept.11-17 at the Golf Center at Kings Island.

Among those who will play are Gary McCord, J.C. Snead, Dana Quigley, Jim Thorpe, Walter Morgan, Mike McCullough, Joe Inman, Ed Dougherty, Jim Ahrens and past winners Gibby Gilbert and Hugh Baiocchi.

While not formally committing yet, defending Kroger champion Gil Morgan indicated to French he plans to be back this year, as did Bruce Fleisher, Graham Marsh, Gil Morgan, Bob Charles, Jay Sigel, Bruce Summerhays, Tom Wargo and Larry Nelson, who finished in a regulation tie with Tom Watson and eventual winner Tom Kite Sunday at the Tradition in Arizona.

French, who is in her first year as tournament director after serving as coordinator the last decade, also received a favorable response from Andy North, who is one of the few pro golfers to win a pair of U.S. Open championships.

“We'll be working on getting a lot of these top players formally committed over the next couple of months,” French said. “If last weekend's tournament is anything like we'll see the rest of this year, then our tournament in Cincinnati will be one of the best it's been in years.”
