Weird weather due for weekend

BY JIM HANNAH
The Cincinnati Enquirer

This week's wacky weather is about to take another turn. Forecasts through the weekend call for everything from heavy thunderstorms to possible tornadic activity to grauple.

Grauple? It's a word used to describe granular snow pellets, also called soft hail.

“It will be another strange one Saturday,” said AccuWeather meteorologist Scott Homan, “much like what you saw on Tuesday,” when Great er Cincinnati experienced rain, sleet, hail and sunny skies within hours.

This weekend's volatile weather will be caused by a storm system that is moving from Missouri to the Northeast, Mr. Homan said. It will be followed by a low-pressure system out of Canada carrying with it temperatures dipping into the low 30s.

Today, conditions will be ripe for the formation of tornadoes, said National Weather Service Meteorologist Jim Lott in Wilmington. But he said that strong winds — in excess of 50 mph — and damaging hail are more likely.

“We are just now moving into the severe weather season,” he said. “It is typical to get this kind of weather in April.”

And it's not uncommon to see snow in April. In 1998, there was a trace of snow recorded on April 8.

Mr. Lott said sleet and grauple could follow on Saturday as temperatures drop.

As of Thursday, the Cincinnati area had received 15.31 inches of rain this year, about 5 inches above normal.

That has been good news for farmers as the Tristate continues to pull itself out of last year's drought.

Today's forecast calls for a high of 67, according to AccuWeather. Saturday will be windy and much cooler with rain and snow likely.

The morning high will be 49 with temperatures falling throughout the day.

Sunday will bring some sunshine, with a high of 55.
