Day of thanksgiving for those who helped

The Tornado: One Year Later

All volunteers who contributed to the recovery of the April 9, 1999, tornado are cordially invited to the commons at Sycamore High School at 2 p.m. today.

The victims want to thank you.

Organizers have named the event “A Day of Appreciation — Tribute to Volunteers.” Plans for a living memorial will be unveiled. The high school is at 7400 Cornell Road in Montgomery.

Also, at 3 p.m. today, Boy Scout Troop 674 will dedicate a 20-foot tall sunset maple tree at 1132 Marlette Drive in Sycamore Township. This tree is given in honor of Victor LaFay, an adult troop leader whose home was destroyed in the tornado. The parents' committee of Troop 674 raised the money for the tree.

Finally, at 4 p.m. today the Montgomery Community Baptist Church and the Congregation Ohav Shalom will join for an anniversary service focusing on the healing and friendships that have developed since the storm, but will also remember the suffering that has been endured.

Montgomery Baptist is located at 11251 Montgomery Road across from Harper's Point.
