From farm to golf course
By John Schutte

For years the joke around the McKay farm was the land would make a better golf course.
In May of 1999 that joke became a reality as the McKay's opened the front nine of Majestic Springs Golf Course. The second nine is scheduled to open in July.
I talked to two guys from Columbus at a Christmas party in 1996, Roger McKay said. They had built a course and they made me look into the possibility further.
McKay consulted with architects Michael Hurzdan and Barry Serafin and they believed the approximately 2,200 acres of farmland in Wilmington would make a great golf course.
The day after the zoning came through, we moved the cows off the property and started the transformations process, McKay said We all agreed to move quickly.
The end result is a links style course that has a Scottish feel to it. A new, more durable breed of bent grass was used for the fairways, and the rough areas are native grass.
Majestic Springs is one of two new courses in the area this season. The other is The Lynx at Grand Victoria Casino in Rising Sun which celebrates its opening May 5.
