Mason beats Winton Woods for coach's 500th win
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Ken Gray, Mason's veteran baseball coach, reached a milestone on Monday that few achieve.
A 9-3 victory over Winton Woods gave Gray his 500th career victory, dating to 1975, when he took over for the late Dave Poppelwell.
Few of us survive in this field as long as I have at Mason, Gray said. It's a nice milestone, but probably the best thing about it is all the nice coaches I've been associated with over the years.
After coaching from 1975-79, Gray took off the 1980 and '81 seasons but returned in 1982. Mason's best season was in 1987, when the Comets finished state runners-up in Division II, losing to Coldwater.
My son, Brian, had four hits in the state semifinals and two in the championship, Gray said. Today, my other son, Brent, had three hits, which is exciting for me.
Clermont Northeastern 7, Hillsboro 0 Scotty Stocker struck out 13 and alallowed only one hit, and went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI to keep Clermont Northeastern undefeated.
St. Bernard 3, CHCA 1 Brooks Robinson Hazelbaker struck out 16 and allowed four hits to improve to 3-1 on the season.
La Salle 10, Roger Bacon 3 After starting the season with only two runs in consecutive losses, the Lancers have won three consecutive games, scoring 22 runs.
The Lancers scored six runs with two outs in the seventh as Doug Kruthaupt and Shaun McDonough hit back-to-back RBI doubles.
