Jail pulls plug on phones

Butler Co. inmates accused in scheme

BY Janice Morse
The Cincinnati Enquirer

HAMILTON — Butler County Jail inmates are probably feeling more disconnected from the outside world.

Their phones were shut off Thursday, Sheriff Harold Don Gabbard said in a news release, after three inmates were charged in an alleged scam.

Unsuspecting parties were duped into accepting collect calls from the jail's pay phones, officials said, and then the inmates found a way to dial other parties and have the calls billed to the person who originally accepted the call.

Three Hamilton men — Charles Taggart, 23, Christopher Barger, 28, and William Parrish, 31 — were charged with unlawful use of telecommunications, a fifth-de gree felony.

The charge carries a sentence of six to 12 months.

Mr. Taggart was being held on drug charges, Mr. Barger on burglary and Mr. Parrish on receiving stolen property.

Sheriff Gabbard has ordered that the phones remain disconnected until telephone company officials can assure jail officials that the loophole has been corrected.
