Dowlin less of a target, raises less cash

Portune-Bedinghaus battle may cost $1 million

BY HOWARD WILKINSON
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Hamilton County Commissioner John Dowlin's race for re-election has not only drawn less attention than the re-election campaign of his Republican colleague, Bob Bedinghaus, it has drawn less money.

While Mr. Bedinghaus has about $138,000 in the bank, Mr. Dowlin has a campaign fund of $30,547, according to campaign finance reports filed Friday with the Hamilton County Board of Elections.

Mr. Dowlin's Democratic opponent, Colerain Township Trustee Joe Wolterman, reported a campaign fund of only $9,925 — most of it raised in a joint fund-raising event last month with Cincinnati Councilman Todd Portune, who is running against Mr. Bedinghaus.

Mr. Dowlin and Mr. Bedinghaus have been on opposite sides of most issues dealing with construction of riverfront stadiums for the Reds and Bengals.

Mr. Bedinghaus has been the leading proponent of the projects, while Mr. Dowlin has been a frequent critic. So, while Mr. Bedinghaus has received $49,000 from Reds' principal owner Carl Lindner and his family and another $11,000 from Bengals' executives, Mr. Dowlin has received nothing from those sources.
