Man accused in Fairfield Twp. rape

HAMILTON A Hamilton man is accused in the rape of a 29-year-old woman who told police she was attacked in her Fairfield Township home.
Rex McCracken, 38, was released Friday from the Butler County Jail after posting $20,050 bond.
He is scheduled to appear in Butler County Area II Court in Hamilton for a preliminary hearing Wednesday.
The rape charge stems from a report filed with Fairfield Town ship police Thursday.
The woman told police that the man, a former co-worker, had previously visited her house socially. She said that at around 11 a.m. Thursday, the man forced his way into her home, grabbed her and threw her on the couch, and raped her.
The woman was taken to Mercy Hospital North for treatment.
Based on a radio broadcast description, Hamilton police spotted Mr. McCracken and arrested him at Village and Third streets around 3:15 p.m. Thursday.
Chief D. Michael Kirsch commended Capt. Alan Laney and Officer Vern Shobe for their efforts in the case.
Because the date was the two-year anniversary of the first in a string of attacks by the so-called Mason rapist, Chief Kirsch at first thought perhaps that man had struck again. But then he learned that the Mason rapist's physical description differed dramatically from the description given by the Fairfield Township woman.
She reported being assaulted by a black man whose name she knew; the Mason rapist is an unidentified white man with blue eyes and red hair.
