Teen saves sister, self from fire

Fire chief lauds quick thinking

BY Janice Morse
The Cincinnati Enquirer

UNION TWP. — A 13-year-old boy's quick action saved him and his 3-year-old sister from a smoky blaze that caused minor injuries to four firefighters, Assistant Fire Chief Tony Goller said Tuesday.

The fire, reported in this Butler County community around 6 p.m. Monday, caused as much as $150,000 damage to their grandpar ents' home at 7158 Shaggy Bark Drive, Mr. Goller said.

The boy, Joey Barnett, and girl, Amber Meadows, apparently live at the home owned by their grandmother, Joyce Hauke, Mr. Goller said. They were at home alone in an upstairs bedroom when the boy saw smoke coming under the door. He opened a window, and he and his sister escaped to the roof. They shouted for neighbors, who called firefighters, said Mr. Goller.

The children's actions “definitely saved both of them, because when our first ladder company got to the scene, the whole place was filled with smoke,” he said. Neighbors helped the children to safety before firefighters arrived.

Twenty-one firefighters fought the blaze. Four — Randy Hanifen, Scott Brown, Pete Carusone and Lt. Mark Brate — were treated at Be thesda North Hospital. Mr. Hanifen and Mr. Brown suffered burns; Lt. Brate, a sprained ankle; and Mr. Carusone, nausea and smoke inhalation.

The fire appeared to have started in the first-floor family room. Its cause was under investigation.
