Storm fells trees, power lines

BY Jim Hannah
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Fierce thunderstorms with winds of up to 50 mph and at least one tornado barreled through Ohio on Thursday evening, causing scattered damage. No injuries were reported.

The National Weather Service at Wilmington confirmed that at least one tornado touched down in the west-central part of the state. High winds knocked down trees and power lines.

Radar indicated a tornado 16 miles west of Springfield, moving northeast at 50 mph. Spotters observed the tornado on the ground near Fairborn, 10 miles northeast of Dayton, at 6:35 p.m.

With the wind kicking up, ominous clouds moving overhead and spectacular lightning on the horizon, the Hamilton County Emergency Management Agency sounded its 185 outdoor warning sirens shortly before 6:30 p.m.

It was to warn people of severe weather, but there were no tornadoes in Hamilton County.

There are two weather scenarios in which the sirens are activated, said agency Director Don Maccarone. The sirens sounded because there was a severe thunderstorm warning while under a tornado watch. Mr. Maccarone said these guidelines were set by the National Weather Service several years ago.

The tornado watch expired at 8 p.m. Thursday.

Police agencies reported many downed limbs. A downed tree closed two southbound lanes of Interstate 75, north of Galbraith Road near Arlington Heights, at 7:15 p.m., police said.

The storms were ahead of a cold front that was to drop temperatures in the Tristate from a high of 80 degrees Thursday to a high of 53 degrees today. It'll be cloudy, damp and windy.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
