Tennessee man may be $80M Powerball winner

LOUISVILLE — A grocery store in Whitley County sold the only winning ticket for Wednesday night's Powerball drawing, worth almost $80 million.
The lucky ticket was bought at Ray's Superior Market in Williamsburg, about 20 miles from the Tennessee border, said Kentucky Lottery spokeswoman Kristen Greenert.
Ms. Greenert said the lottery had not heard from the winner.
But store employees say Melvin Rhodes, a retired funeral home director from Clinton, Tenn., held the lucky ticket.
“Rhodes is a regular at our store,” said Mary Lambdin. “He comes in every Friday morning and buys a ticket.”
The winning numbers were 3, 8, 9, 20, 49 and the Powerball was 22.
Kentucky Lottery officials would not confirm that Mr. Rhodes was the winner.
“Until we have the winning ticket in our hands and can run it through our series of security checks, we do not have an official winner to announce,” said lottery spokesman Rick Redman.
