Silverton assesses future of city pool

By Allen Howard
The Cincinnati Enquirer

SILVERTON — A committee is studying whether it is economically feasible to repair and reopen the city's 50-year-old swimming pool.

City Administrator David Waltz said the pool will not be open this year while the committee conducts the study.

“The pool may have outlived its usefulness,” Mr. Waltz said.

In each of the last two years, financier Carl W. Lindner provided $40,000 to open the pool after it was closed in city budget cuts.

“We need to take a long look at whether to pay about $700,000 to repair it or replace everything for $1.3 million. If we shell out that much money we will be taking away from other services that are needed,” Mr. Waltz said.

Idella Thompson, a member of the committee and the park board, said the pool's condition makes it unsafe.

“We would be taking a big risk if we open the pool in this condition,” Mrs. Thompson said. “We wanted to announce early that the pool would not be open this year in order for people here to decide where to go.”

Nearby pools include the Pleasant Ridge Community Center and Blue Ash YMCA.

The two years of patchwork on the pool did not generate much enthusiasm among residents to use the pool. Mr. Waltz said only 42 pool memberships were sold in Silverton last year.

“This does not include day passes, but it clearly shows that there are not enough passes and memberships sold to sustain operating the pool at a cost of $50,000,” Mr. Waltz said.
