Skeleton found near river on Ky. side

By Kristina Goetz
The Cincinnati Enquirer

FORT THOMAS — Two children who went fishing on the Ohio River Saturday found the skeletal remains of an adult male, police said. The remains were at the river's edge near a wooded area.

Fort Thomas Police Detective Mike Daly said authorities don't know the man's identity, how long his remains have been there or whether they were placed there or washed up from the river.

“There was quite a bit there,” Detective Daly said.

The children found the skeleton about 8:30 p.m. and called Fort Thomas police. Because it was dark, evidence could not be collected until Sunday morning. An officer stayed at the river all night to watch over the site.

The Campbell County Coroner's office called in Emily Craig, a forensic anthropologist from the state medical examiner's office. She spent part of Sunday afternoon collecting evidence where the body was found just off Ky. 8 past Tower Hill Road.

Detective Daly said Dr. Craig took the remains, clothing and samples of dirt and other evidence to her lab in Frankfort.

Detective Daly said the evidence was dirty and it would take a while to process. There was no identification found with the remains and investigators say it is too early to say how the man died, although the case is being handled as a potential homicide.

Police departments in the area are checking their missing persons files. It is the second time this month Dr. Craig has been called to Northern Kentucky. The skeletal remains of a woman were found along Mile Hill on Ky. 20 in Boone County. Investigators are still working to identify those remains.
