Two area filmmakers due here for seminar

By Margaret A. McGurk
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Two filmmakers with roots in Southwest Ohio will lead a one-day seminar for aspiring directors and screenwriters in Cincinnati next month.

The program, called “Creative Control” will be presented May 13 at the Vernon Manor Hotel under the sponsorship of the Greater Cincinnati Northern Kentucky Film Commission.

Now based in Los Angeles, Tim Metcalfe is a Cincinnati native and the author of several screenplays, including Revenge of the Nerds and Kalifornia, a script he co-authored with Cincinnatian Stephen Levy. The writers disavowed the resulting movie, which they said did not reflect their intent. More recently, Mr. Metcalfe wrote the script for the television production The Day Lincoln Was Shot.

Mr. Metcalfe wrote and directed Killer, starring James Woods. That movie will be shown before the May 13 seminar.

Also scheduled to take part in the program is Edward Radtke of Yellow Springs. He is the writer and director of The Dream Catcher, an independent film shot in Cincinnati and Dayton, as well as other locations as far away as Nevada.

Mr. Radtke won the best director award at the Los Angeles Independent Film Festival, where the film had its public premiere. Since then, it has been shown in several other film festivals around the world.

The seminar begins at 2 p.m. Killer will be shown at 11 a.m. Enrollment fee is $30 for film commission members, $35 for non-members, and $40 at the door. Call 784-1744 to register.
