Net result: Vikings stun No. 3 Sycamore
The Cincinnati Enquirer
The last time Princeton's boys tennis team beat Sycamore isn't known.
But first-year coach Bob Caress and the Vikings will cherish Tuesday's 3-2 upset victory over the No.3-ranked Aviators for a long time.
It has been at least 15 years and maybe 20, Caress said of the losing streak. I'm not sure if the school has records going back that far.
Caress' two sons, Robbie and Andy, played major roles in the victory.
Robbie defeated Sycamore's previously unbeaten Derek Johnson 6-3, 7-6, and Andy teamed with Colin Morrissey in a 7-6, 6-4 doubles victory over Bryan Pittman and Tippy Berry.
It makes you nervous when your own kids are playing, Caress said. It makes it more difficult to coach and watch the kids, but it's been a lot of fun.
Wil Lofgren, a freshman transfer from Sycamore and the son of teaching professionals Bill and Dorianna, also came up with a big victory at No.3 singles, downing Marshall Kuresman 7-6, 6-4.
This was not only a conference (GMC) but also an Ohio State Team Tournament match, Caress said. (Sycamore coach) Dave (Tanner) and I are doubles partners, and it was tough, because we are good friends.
Baseball
A spectacular catch by Jay Stitsinger of a ball hit in the left-center-field gap in the eighth inning preserved Hamilton's 6-5 victory over Glen Este Tuesday at Glen Este.
I thought the game was over, Hamilton coach Dan Bowling said. The ironic thing is that we've been stumbling on defense and finally won one with defense.
Senior Lewis Jones drove in the winning run with a home run in the top of the eighth for the Big Blue.
