CARLISLE A 25-year veteran of the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office will head the police department here while village officials continue their search for a permanent chief.
Robert Pieper, a retired sheriff's lieutenant and former police chief of Sycamore Township, begins his Carlisle job Saturday.
He's going to serve as interim, and he also wants to be considered for the permanent position, Village Manager Brad Townsend said. We are pleased to have someone with the qualifications that Mr. Pieper brings to the position.
Most recently, Chief Pieper was a teacher with the Tri-County Regional Policing Institute.
He will be paid $3,000 a month as Carlisle's interim chief.
Police Chief Richard St. John, who has headed this Warren County village's department for about eight months, is leaving to become police chief in Fairfield Township, where he lives.
As interim, Chief Pieper will guide an agency that has seen its administration re vamped over the past 15 months. The department was rocked by a string of problems last year that led to the resignations of for mer Chief Gary Long and Sgt. Brad Fogle. They were accused of vandalizing the home of former village manager Eric Levitt in 1995.
The village is accepting applications for permanent chief until May 12, and about a half-dozen people have applied, Mr. Townsend said.
