A body investigators believe is that of a British computer consultant kidnapped from Florence was burnt beyond facial recognition. DNA and dental records will be required to confirm identity, the FBI said Friday.
Medical examiners suspect the man died of strangulation, but a final determination might not be made until next week, said FBI Special Agent Sandra Carroll in Newark, N.J.
Authorities believe Paul Jeffrey Gale, 28, of Naples, Fla., was kidnapped from a Florence hotel room and killed by Gregory J. Marcinski because Mr. Gale was dating Mr. Marcinski's former lover.
Mr. Marcinski, 23, of Brick, N.J. has been held without bail since April 20, three days after Mr. Gale was reported missing.
The body was found about two miles from Mr. Marcinski's residence early Thursday.
Mr. Marcinski could face the death penalty in Kentucky if authorities here decide to press murder charges, said Linda Tally Smith, an assistant common wealth attorney for Boone County.
According to investigators, Mr. Marcinski flashed bogus FBI credentials to get into Mr. Gale's room at the Holiday Inn in Florence.
Mr. Marcinski was extradited to Kentucky this week on state kidnapping charges and a federal charge of impersonating an FBI agent.
Mr. Gale had apartments in Naples, Fla., and in Mount Laurel, N.J., where he worked for TRW Integrated Supply. He was working for TRW in Kentucky this month as a consultant in the merger of two companies.
