St. Ursula Academy is kicking off a large-scale, $10 million expansion that will add classrooms and a new gymnasium/convocation center as well as increase the endowment for the girls school in Walnut Hills.

A ceremony at 2:30 p.m. today at the school launches the public phase of a Generations Campaign. Architectural plans for Margaret Unnewehr Schott Hall, named for former Reds principal owner Marge Schott, will be unveiled.

The Board of Trustees says $3.8 million has been raised. The goal of Phase I of the campaign is $6.8 million.

“We are excited about the progress made in the beginning of the campaign and looking forward to the conclusion,” said Judith Wimberg, president of the academy.

The campaign's name honors the generations of sisters, alumnae, students and friends who have contributed to the school's excellence and recognizes the legacy the campaign will leave, Ms. Wimberg said.

She said this is the most ambitious fund-raising and expansion program since the school was founded in 1910.

Construction of Margaret Unnewehr Schott Hall started in March after a $1 million gift from Marge Schott, the largest single gift ever received by the school.

The building at Fleming and Upland is expected to be completed by August 2001. It will have eight science classrooms/laboratories, 10 other classrooms and two music rooms.

The gymnasium and convocation center will seat 1,000 and provide space for ceremonies, rallies and liturgical celebrations.

The order of Ursulines of Cincinnati has made a $500,000 gift to the endowment fund that will be matched by the campaign. Interest from the fund is used for scholarships.

The second phase of the campaign is expected to be launched in four years. It will include converting the current gym to a theater, expanding the library into a media center and renovating classrooms.
