Turbulent times
The time around the May 4, 1970, shootings at Kent State University was filled with anti-war protests:
April 15 Students occupy the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) building at Miami University in Oxford. Ohio State Highway Patrol officers arrest 155 protesters.
April 20 Miami students stage a "flush-in that incapacitates the Oxford city water supply for two days.
April 30 Hundreds of University of Cincinnati students protest the invasion of Cambodia.
May 1 About 130 UC students are arrested during an anti-war rally on Fountain Square.
May 2 The Ohio National Guard is ordered onto the Kent State University campus, where students burned down the ROTC building.
May 3 The National Guard uses tear gas to disperse a crowd at Kent State. In Cleveland, about 75 students take over the ROTC building at Case Western Reserve University.
May 4 National Guard troops fire on protesters at Kent State; 13 students are shot, four die.
May 5 Thousands of protesters march at the University of Kentucky. The ROTC building is set afire and the school is closed.
May 6 Ohio State University closes after an attempt to torch the ROTC building.
May 7 UC students take over a second campus building in as many days. UC eventually is closed for the quarter.
May 8 200 colleges close around the nation, including Miami.
May 14 3,000 Ohio University students in Athens are dispersed with tear gas. The school closes a day later.
May 18 Miami reopens.
